If you’re buying a Subaru WRX or STI, the color to have is blue. Especially if you get yours with gold wheels. It’s not just cool, it’s an iconic color combo. But if you decide you want to buy a different car in blue, you may be in for a surprise when you try to sell it. That’s because blue can be a pretty unpopular color.
Recently, consumer protection attorney and R&T contributor Steve Lehto looked over the results of a new AutoList study that compared car color and selling price, and the results were pretty fascinating. For example, a gray convertible was worth $389 less than average, while a red convertible was worth $338 more.

On a truck, the color to avoid is blue. It reduced the price by $237. Instead, go for black. If you’re buying a sedan, however, you want to avoid black since it’s the least-valuable color. With hatchbacks, the difference isn’t much. A blue one is only worth $39 less, while a white one is worth $79 more.
Obviously, these results are are generalities and won’t necessarily apply in every single situation. Nor is it wrong to buy a car with an odd color simply because you like it. But if you’re concerned about maximizing resale value, it’s an important factor to consider.
