the very first 1967 Camaro, America launched into a Ford vs. Chevy battle that’s still going strong after 50 years—notwithstanding the bleak years from 2002 to 2010 when there was no Camaro. Ford may have invented the modern pony car with the 1964 1/2 Mustang, but it took the introduction of the Camaro to bring some real competition to the table.

And each of the Camaro’s six generations serves as a microcosm, illustrating the best and worst automotive trends of each decade. Just look at the first generation Camaro, lithe and light-looking but with a businesslike angularity. Or the second-gen pony car, with a swoopy body style that looked almost European—until it sprouted gaudy plastic impact bumpers. The third generation Camaro was the epitome of creased 1980s angularity, while the fourth-gen sported the rounded organic shapes of the 1990s and early 2000s.
