Expanded Takata Airbag Recall Included 2006-’07 Mitsubishi Lancer, Lancer Evolution

“In the event of a crash necessitating airbag deployment, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling,” said NHTSA in its recall summary. “An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.”

WASHINGTON — Mitsubishi Motors North America is adding 38,628 2006-’07 Mitsubishi Lancer and Lancer Evolution cars to the Takata recall for defective front-passenger airbag inflators, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

There are no injuries or fatalities linked to this expanded Mitsubishi recall, Mitsubishi spokesman Alex Fedorak told Edmunds.

The affected Lancer vehicles were built from June 29, 2005 to June 19, 2007.

Mitsubishi dealers will replace the front-passenger airbag inflator. A date has not been set for the recall. Owners can contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820.

Edmunds says: Owners of these vehicles should stay in close contact with their Mitsubishi dealer for the latest information on parts availability.
