WASHINGTON — Mazda North American Operations added 731,628 vehicles to an expanded Takata airbag recall, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Friday.

“In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front airbags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperate cycling,” said NHTSA in its recall summary. “An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.”

There are no accidents or injuries linked to the expanded recall, Mazda spokeswoman Tamara Mlynarcyzk told Edmunds.

Mazda dealers will replace the front-passenger airbag inflator. The recall is expected to begin on July 15. Owners can contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500.

Edmunds says: Owners of these vehicles should stay in touch with their dealer to stay updated on parts availability.
