If you wanted to buy a car for one purpose only—doing huge, smoky burnouts and dizzying donuts—you probably wouldn’t put a Smart ForTwo on your list. Especially not the electric model.
And as the guys at Hoonigan found out, you’d be entirely correct.
On this week’s YouTube update, the Hoonigan team took their guy Kikawa’s Smart ForTwo Electric Drive out in the back parking lot for some hooning. They wanted to see if the diminutive, polite little two-seater could light some tire fires.

It did, but it took all day and about a half-dozen people to make it happen.
First they had to figure out how to disable the traction control. Then they overinflated the rear tires. Then they soaked them, first in water, then in WD-40. None of this was enough to properly set the tires ablaze.
What did it finally take? All of the aforementioned tricks, plus enough manpower to overcome the wee Smart’s 80-or-so horsepower, plus some creative positioning to minimize gravity’s traction-enhancing abilities.

We love our jobs here at Road & Track, but even we couldn’t justify spending the better part of an afternoon on such a fruitless, mostly tire-smoke-less task. We can’t deny one thing, though—they worked hard for that burnout.
